By the time December rolls around, many people are ready for a break. But Dr. Chuck Meakin’s time off doesn’t exactly involve a relaxing evening on the couch.

Instead, the local oncologist can be found shivering in the Pacific Ocean — or maybe running up and down a Southern California beach under the watchful eye of a retired Navy SEAL officer.

For the last three years, Meakin, who lives in Gastonia, has signed up for a three-day retreat called Unbeatable Mind Academy in a resort town near San Diego.

“The three-day retreat takes place in a luxury hotel with a remarkable spa and restaurants,” Meakin said. “But each morning, the 125 participants from all over the world get out on the grounds early and subject themselves to a challenging workout with the visiting fitness experts or retired (special operations) members of the staff.”

The event is put on by Mark Devine, a motivational speaker, author and entrepreneur who spent nine years on active duty as an officer with the Navy’s storied SEAL teams and 11 as a Reserve SEAL. Apparently, Devine organizes the the program by breaking goals into five “mountains” participants must overcome: physical, mental, emotional, intuitional and mind/heart.
